He is included on the Diocese of Providence’s List of Credibly Accused Clergy. He died in May 2012.

Father Robert Carpentier History of Sexual Abuse
- According to the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Appendix A report, Father Robert Carpentier allegedly sexually abused a 13-year-old boy between 1973 and 1974 while serving as pastor at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church in Woonsocket, using his position of trust with the boy’s family to groom him before engaging in fondling, masturbation, and oral sex. The abuse continued for over a year and included out-of-state trips.
In April 1992, when the victim’s family reported the abuse to the Diocese, Carpentier admitted to the abuse. In October 1992, the victim filed a civil lawsuit against him and the Diocese.
Despite the admission, there is no record that the Diocese notified law enforcement at the time. Carpentier was sent to a treatment center in Connecticut and later went on sabbatical at Boston College, continuing to receive financial support from the Diocese.
- In 2020, a second man reported to the Diocese that Carpentier sexually abused him as a young boy during the time Carpentier was assigned to St. Agatha’s Church in Woonsocket between 1969 and 1973.
- In September 2002, claims against Carpentier were settled as part of a $13.5 million mass settlement involving 36 victims of priest abuse in the Diocese of Providence.
