Seven Survivors Have Filed Lawsuits Alleging Child Sexual Abuse at JCCA’s Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School

July 7, 2025

Seven brave survivors of child sexual abuse perpetrated by staff members at JCCA’s Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School have come forward to seek justice. Represented by Levy Konigsberg Attorneys including Madeline O’Reilly, seven survivors filed sexual abuse lawsuits this week against the JCCA and others for the sexual abuse they suffered while confined at JCCA’s Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School at the hands of employees. These special needs children were negligently placed at JCCA’s facilities by The City of New York’s Administration for Children’s Services (ACS).

Our legal team is leading the way in investigating child sexual abuse claims at JCCA’s Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School and other facilities throughout New York.

For many years, New York’s most vulnerable children have been sexually abused, neglected, and traumatized at residential treatment centers throughout the state, including JCCA’s Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School. ACS’s practice of placing special needs children at residential treatment facilities like Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School that continuously fail to provide a safe and secure environment for these vulnerable children has caused untold numbers of minors to be subjected to regular sexual abuse perpetrated by staff members. There have been numerous documented and publicized incidents of abuse perpetrated by staff members at JCCA’s Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School

According to the lawsuit, many different staff at Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School were involved in sexual abuse, such as:

  • Counselors
  • Supervisors
  • Teachers
  • And others

Despite the widespread and well-known sexual abuse of children at JCCA’s Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School little has been done to protect these children or to punish their abusers. It is this pattern of negligence on the part of ACS and the JCCA that has prompted the filing of these lawsuits. The shocking negligence in the Defendants’ failure to stop the sexual abuse of children at Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School is detailed in the complaints that were filed this week.

Leading the Way for Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

Levy Konigsberg and its team of dedicated trial attorneys are at the forefront of childhood sexual abuse litigation, having filed hundreds of lawsuits nationwide on behalf of survivors.

In announcing this week’s filings, a Levy Konigsberg attorney stated:

“When these brave survivors were minors, they were placed at Edenwald Center and Pleasantville Cottage School to receive supportive services and residential treatment. They had an expectation of safety, security, and care. Many of the children placed in these facilities suffered from developmental disabilities and instead of supportive services and special education these children were subjected to brutal sexual abuse at the hands of the adult employees entrusted with their protection. Despite the known risk of sexual abuse in residential treatment facilities for vulnerable children, there is no evidence that JCCA and others engaged in efforts to protect minors from this foreseeable danger. These lawsuits brought by courageous survivors seek justice for the many years of rampant and systematic sexual abuse inflicted on children at JCCA’s facilities that likely continues to this day.”

Levy Konigsberg represents hundreds of survivors of child sexual abuse at and plans to continue fighting tirelessly on their behalf.
