ROUNDUP NON-HODGKIN LYMPHOMA LAWSUITS

Roundup exposure allegedly caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma, leading to nationwide lawsuits against Monsanto and Bayer over cancer risks linked to glyphosate.

Overview of Roundup

The extensive use of Roundup, a herbicide made by the company Monsanto (which was bought by Bayer in  2018), has significant ties to an increased number of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) cases and other serious health conditions, including but not limited to:

In 2015, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. Since then, more evidence has piled up showing links between glyphosate exposure and multiple serious health conditions, including various forms of cancer.

Long-term exposure to glyphosate, the main ingredient in Roundup, can damage cells, cause oxidative stress, and harm DNA—factors that can lead to cancer. These discoveries have sparked widespread concern about the safety of glyphosate-based weed killers, especially for people who are exposed to them frequently or in large amounts.

Legal action by individuals affected and their families has resulted in lawsuits holding the manufacturers accountable.

Significant Settlements and Verdicts

As of December 2024, the company has paid roughly $11 billion in settlements and $6 billion in verdicts for nearly half of the 170,000 cases filed. The amount varies from case to case.

Some notable cases are highlighted below:

  • In February 2026, Bayer proposed a settlement worth up to $7.25 billion to resolve tens of thousands of current and future lawsuits claiming that its Roundup weedkiller caused cancer. The proposed nationwide settlement was filed in state court in St. Louis, Missouri, and would create a long-term claims program funded by capped annual payments over a period of up to 21 years.
  • In October 2025, the Missouri Supreme Court declined to hear the appeal of a $611 million verdict awarded to three people who claimed the company’s Roundup weedkiller caused their cancer.  The verdict was awarded to the plaintiffs in a 2023 trial in Cole County, Missouri.
  • In March 2025, a Georgia jury ordered Bayer to pay about $2.1 billion to a man who claimed Roundup caused his cancer. This included $65 million in compensation and $2 billion in punitive damages.
  • In October 2024, a Pennsylvania jury awarded $78 million to William and Margaret Melissen.
  • In January 2024, John McKivison was awarded $2.25 billion, although this was later reduced to $400 million.
  • In December 2023, Kelly Martel was awarded $3.5 million by a jury.
  • In November 2023, a Missouri jury awarded three plaintiffs $1.56 billion (reduced to $611 million).
  • In October 2023, $175 million for Ernest Caranci in Pennsylvania, $1.25 million for John Durnell in Missouri, and $332 million (reduced to $28 million) for Mike Dennis in California.
  • In May 2019, Alva and Alberta Pilliod, a couple from California, were granted $2.05 billion (reduced to $87 million).
  • In March 2019, Edwin Hardeman was awarded $80 million (reduced to $25 million).

  • In August 2018, a jury awarded $289 million (reduced to $78 million) to Dewayne Johnson from California.
