Depo-Provera, an injectable contraceptive, is widely used by women seeking long-term birth control. Research and Lawsuits involving Depo-Provera

• In January 2026, it was reported that Pfizer faced a surging number of lawsuits alleging that its Depo-Provera contraceptive caused intracranial meningiomas, a type of brain tumor. A federal judge in Florida scheduled the first bellwether trial in a multidistrict litigation (MDL) for December 2026. 

As of early January 2026, the litigation comprised more than 2,100 individual lawsuits. These proceedings were coordinated alongside related actions in New York and Delaware.

The surge in legal actions followed a December 2025 decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to approve a change to Depo-Provera’s labeling. 

Lawsuits drew heavily on a growing body of scientific research published in 2024 and 2025. In March 2024, a large study in the British Medical Journal found that women who used Depo-Provera for more than one year were several times more likely to develop an intracranial meningioma. A subsequent U.S. study published in 2025 reported a significantly increased risk among women who had used the injection for four years or longer. Reported symptoms linked to the tumors allegedly included chronic headaches, seizures, memory loss, and speech difficulties, often requiring surgical intervention. While Pfizer has not admitted liability and is expected to contest the claims, the company acknowledged that warning labels were updated earlier in other jurisdictions, including the UK and Canada, before the U.S. label change.

• In December 2025, the Food and Drug Administration approved a label change for Pfizer’s birth control injections, Depo-Provera CI and Depo-Subq Provera 104, to include a warning about the risk of meningioma. 

Pfizer was involved in a lawsuit with more than 1,000 women who alleged the company failed to warn them about these brain tumor risks. The lawsuit claimed that Pfizer was aware of the potential link between the progestin-based injection and meningiomas due to studies dating back to 1983. Legal representatives for the plaintiffs alleged that the company misled the public and the medical community.
