Research and Lawsuits involving Vision Loss Associated With Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda, and Victoza

• In August 2025, researchers reportedly determined that liraglutide, the active ingredient in drugs like Saxenda and Victoza, was associated with an increased risk of Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy (NAION). This condition occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is restricted, causing the structure to die and leading to permanent vision loss, often referred to as an eye stroke. Studies noted that the median time between using these drugs and developing the condition was approximately three years. 

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy, was also allegedly linked to a higher likelihood of developing NAION. Lawsuits were filed by users alleging that Novo Nordisk, manufacturer of Ozempic and Wegovy, failed to warn patients and doctors about the risks of permanent visual impairment. 

In June 2025, a petition was filed in New Jersey to group 21 similar vision loss cases into multicounty litigation. 

• In August 2025, a study published in JAMA Ophthalmology found that users of specific GLP-1 medications faced a higher risk of developing NAION. 

• In September 2025, it was reported by Mount Sinai Health System that GLP-1 medications were linked to potential vision changes and ocular complication including NAION. According to the report, the risk of developing NAION was allegedly higher during the first year of using these medications, particularly for patients with smaller optic discs. Additionally, these drugs were linked to an increased risk of worsening wet macular degeneration. 

• In December 2025, a federal judicial panel centralized a growing number of lawsuits against Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly involving allegations of permanent vision loss associated with their products. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ordered that cases claiming GLP-1 drugs led to NAION be consolidated in Philadelphia federal court. This new multidistrict litigation, designated as MDL 3163, specifically addresses claims that drugs including Ozempic, Wegovy, Saxenda, and Trulicity can trigger the condition. NAION occurs when blood flow to the optic nerve is blocked or reduced, which can lead to blindness. 30 optic neuropathy lawsuits were pending in federal court and more than 40 in state court at the time. These lawsuits allege that the pharmaceutical companies failed to adequately warn patients that the medications could cause blindness.
