TRANSVAGINAL MESH LAWSUITS

Transvaginal mesh provides support to damaged tissues and weakened organs for women diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or stress urinary incontinence (SUI). Patients have reported complications related to the use of surgical mesh, particularly for the treatment of POP. These include erosion, pain, bleeding and infection. What is Transvaginal Mesh?

Transvaginal mesh is a net-like device made either of a synthetic substance or biological tissue. It is used to repair POP and SUI, conditions that may affect women after a hysterectomy, childbirth or menopause. POP occurs when an organ, such as the bladder, rectum or uterus drops and falls out of place. Some studies have concluded that the use of transvaginal mesh to treat SUI were effective with limited side effects, while complication rates for POP were significantly higher.

What is Happening with Transvaginal Mesh?

The use of transvaginal mesh has resulted in thousands of reports of adverse health events and complications. In 2011, the FDA reclassified transvaginal mesh as a “high risk” (Class III) device following over 4,000 complaints from patients with these devices. The FDA concluded that transvaginal mesh puts women at an increased risk of complications and is no more effective than other treatments for POP and SUI.

Transvaginal mesh implants were not recalled by most manufacturers following these reports. Injuries resulting from transvaginal mesh have led to multi-million-dollar verdicts and settlements, and several class action lawsuits around the world. Transvaginal mesh has been banned in Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom since December, 2017.

Approximately 10% of patients with transvaginal mesh implants have suffered complications. Transvaginal mesh can have serious health consequences, including revision surgery in some cases. This type of surgery can be difficult and painful as the mesh may need to be removed in several stages and require multiple surgeries.
