Have you suffered serious side effects from a prescription drug?
What is Talcum Powder?
Talcum Powder is derived from talc, a mineral comprised of magnesium, silicon, and oxygen. Talc’s moisture-absorbent properties make it a popular cosmetic product. Talc is used in baby powder, adult facial and body powders, and other consumer goods. Some of the talc used in the production of talcum powder is contaminated with asbestos.
What is Happening with Talcum Powder?
The use of talcum powder is associated with the development of ovarian cancer and mesothelioma. Because asbestos and talc naturally occur together, mined talc can become contaminated with asbestos and asbestos-like fibers. According to the World Health Organization and other authorities, there is no safe level of asbestos exposure.
Exposure to asbestos has been shown to significantly increase the risk of developing ovarian cancer. Studies have found that women who use talc powder for feminine hygiene purposes once per week have a 30-60 percent increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. Leading manufacturers of talcum powder have been ordered to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in damages to plaintiffs diagnosed with ovarian cancer who used talc-based feminine hygiene products for decades. These courts have concluded that talc products contributed to the plaintiffs’ cancer and that manufacturers failed to warn consumers about a link between talc products and ovarian cancer. In a groundbreaking case in St. Louis, 22 plaintiffs were the first to receive compensation for the claim that that Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder and Shower to Shower talc contained asbestos and caused them to develop ovarian cancer. The plaintiffs were awarded $4.69 billion in damages.
Users of talcum-based products are also at risk of developing mesothelioma, a cancer that surrounds the lining of the lungs and other organs. Mesothelioma has typically been diagnosed in men who were exposed to asbestos in workplace settings. But mounting evidence indicates that talcum powder companies manufactured products that tested positive for asbestos. Specifically, Johnson & Johnson concealed reports that described asbestos contamination in talc and provided false reports to the FDA denying the presence of asbestos in talc products. In 2018, plaintiffs in two cases in New Jersey and California were awarded substantial sums after establishing that asbestos-tainted Johnson & Johnson products caused them to develop mesothelioma.

J&J Halts Global Sales of Tal-Based Baby Powder
In August 2022, Johnson & Johnson announced that it would stop selling its talc-based baby powder products in all global markets by the end of 2023. Instead, it would shift entirely to cornstarch-based baby powders, which are already sold in some countries. Cornstarch-based baby powder products have not been linked to mesothelioma or ovarian cancer, and the material is biodegradable so it can be safely absorbed by the body.
The fact that J&J knew that cornstarch was safer yet took so long to finally stop all sales of its talc-based baby powder products can be seen as an additional form of corporate negligence. The decision to stop selling the product could also be seen as an unofficial acknowledgment that the products are too dangerous for consumer use. However, the corporation has insisted that the decision is driven by financial concerns, not health concerns.
If you or a loved one has suffered one or more of these complications, you may be entitled to a cash award and compensation for medical expenses. For a free confidential consultation with Talcum Powder Lawyers at our law firm, please call (800) 315-3806 or submit an email inquiry.
