The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has released a series of warnings about voluntary recalls of various Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers, including Valsartan, Losartan, and Irbesartan, due to concerns about the presence of a cancer-causing ingredient in higher-than-allowable levels according to FDA standards. In its most recent statement on September 19, the FDA announced that Torrent Pharmaceuticals Limited expanded its recall to include additional lots of Losartan Potassium Tablets USP and Losartan Potassium/hydrochlorothiazide tablets because of contamination with NMBA. This is the manufacturer’s fifth recall of this product.
The FDA has been issuing notices related to the contamination and voluntary recalls of Valsartan, Losartan, and Irbesartan since July 2018. The FDA continues to monitor levels of the impurities in the target medications and is evaluating how these carcinogens may have formed in Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers. NDMA, NMBA and NDEA have been associated with liver damage and increased risks of liver, kidney, and lung tumors.
