VALSARTAN LAWSUITS

Valsartan is the active ingredient in medications used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. Several drugs containing Valsartan were recalled in July 2018 after an impurity was detected in the medication. This impurity, known as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), was identified as a human carcinogen. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a voluntary recall of drugs containing Valsartan after discovering the presence of the cancer-causing chemical.

However, recent studies have shown that patients taking Valsartan are at serious risk of developing debilitating side effects such as:

  • Liver cancer;
  • Colon or intestinal cancer;
  • Rectal cancer;
  • Stomach cancer; and
  • Kidney cancer

What is Valsartan?

Valsartan was approved by the FDA in December 1996. It is an oral medication that belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers. Angiotensin is a chemical that attaches to receptors mainly located on the muscle cells of blood vessels. Attachment to the receptors causes the blood vessels to narrow and blood pressure to rise. Valsartan works by blocking the angiotensin receptor and lowering the patient’s blood pressure.

What is Happening with Valsartan?

Valsartan from Major Pharmaceuticals, Solco Healthcare (Solco) and Teva Pharmaceuticals Industries (Teva), and Valsartan/Hydrochlorothiazide combination therapies from Solco and Teva were recalled due to the presence of NDMA. The occurrence of NDMA, which carries the risk of cancer, is presumed to be connected to changes in the manufacturing of the active substance of the medication. Other medications containing Valsartan were not implicated in the recall. The FDA continues to investigate the amount of NDMA present in recalled products and the potential side effects for individuals who have taken the medication.

Patients affected by the recall may be concerned about their risks of cancer and future treatment options after stopping the regimen. The risk of cancer from NDMA is typically correlated to the amount that the patient has ingested. The FDA urges users to follow the recall instructions and contact their health care providers to determine the proper course of action.

The recall by the FDA followed similar recalls of Valsartan in 22 other countries, including Germany, Finland, Hungary, the Netherlands, Austria, Ireland, France and Canada.
