He was removed from ministry in 2002 and added to the Diocese of Providence’s List of Credibly Accused Clergy in July 2019. He was subsequently indicted on child molestation charges.

- In March 2026, it was reported that Father John Petrocelli was among four priests charged with child molestation as a result of the Rhode Island Attorney General’s investigation into the Diocese of Providence.
- In November 2020, Petrocelli was indicted on multiple counts of child molestation for allegedly sexually abusing three minors while he served as assistant pastor at Holy Family Church in Woonsocket, Rhode Island between 1981 and 1990.
- In 2008, the Diocese reached a $1.326 million settlement which included Petrocelli’s case. He was accused in a civil lawsuit of sexually abusing a boy in the late 1980s.
