Father John Capparelli, a New Jersey priest, allegedly abused dozens of boys and was named in at least 20 civil lawsuits.
Levy Konigsberg is investigating claims that Father John Capparelli sexually abused minors while serving as a Catholic priest in New Jersey.
Father John Capparelli was ordained in 1980 and served in the Archdiocese of Newark, New Jersey, including assignments at Holy Trinity Church in Westfield, Oratory Prep in Summit, and St. Theresa in Kenilworth, among other parishes.
He was removed from ministry in 1992 and was later laicized. Despite his removal, Capparelli taught in Newark public schools for approximately 20 years before surrendering his teaching license in 2013.
He is included on the Archdiocese of Newark’s List of Credibly Accused Clergy. Capparelli died in March 2019, of a gunshot wound at his home in Henderson, Nevada.

Examples of alleged abuse, and of conditions likely to lead to abuse, include the following:
- By November 2021, Father John Capparelli had been named in at least 20 lawsuits.
Nine of those lawsuits alleged abuse at Holy Trinity Parish in Westfield. Other suits alleged abuse in Ridgewood, North Bergen, Kenilworth, South Plainfield, Harrison, Summit, Scotch Plains, and West New York.
At least 24 other men came forward with similar allegations around the same time.
Capparelli allegedly groped, photographed, and filmed boys he recruited to wrestle in tight swimwear, and was linked to a fetish website he allegedly operated.
- In November 2021, a lawsuit alleged Capparelli engaged in sexual contact with an 18-year-old student at Seton Hall University in South Orange in 2000.
- In July 2011, a civil lawsuit was filed against Capparelli, the Boy Scouts of America, and the Archdiocese of Newark, alleging the sexual abuse of a boy.
In December 2011, a second civil lawsuit was filed against Capparelli.
Both the July and December 2011 lawsuits were settled in 2012.
- In July 2020, new lawsuits were filed against Capparelli’s estate alleging sexual abuse in the 1980s.

For those sexually abused as adults (age 18 or older), the deadline to file a civil lawsuit is seven years from the incident of abuse.
