DETROIT BEHAVIORAL INSTITUTE SEXUAL ABUSE LAWSUITS
Fighting for Survivors Abused at Detroit Behavioral Institute in Michigan
Detroit Behavioral Institute Sexual Abuse Lawsuits involve allegations that minors were allegedly abused, groomed, and exploited at this facility in Michigan.
Levy Konigsberg is investigating claims that children at Detroit Behavioral Institute in Michigan were allegedly sexually abused by staff.
Detroit Behavioral Institute, located in Detroit, Michigan, operated as a behavioral health facility for youth and adolescents in need of mental health treatment and supervision. However, state investigations and lawsuits have raised serious concerns about conditions within the institution, including allegations that staff members engaged in sexual abuse, grooming, and misconduct toward minors.
More than 40 individuals have come forward with similar abuse allegations at the facility over the past two decades. The lawsuits allege that the parent company disregarded and concealed a culture of sexual exploitation while continuing to profit from its operations.

History of Sexual Abuse at Detroit Behavioral Institute in Michigan
State investigations have revealed that Detroit Behavioral Institute staff members allegedly abused minor patients while they were under the institute’s care. These investigations have exposed severe shortcomings in the facility’s ability to protect vulnerable individuals, painting a grim picture of an institution meant to provide healing and support.
Reports indicate a culture of silence and negligence within the institute’s administration. Despite warnings and complaints, Detroit Behavioral Institute allegedly failed to take adequate measures to prevent abuse or protect its patients, allowing perpetrators to operate with impunity.
Examples of alleged abuse, and of conditions likely to lead to abuse, include the following:
- In April 2026, a lawsuit was filed against Detroit Behavioral Institute and Acadia Healthcare alleging that a 17-year-old was sexually abused and groomed by a staff member at the facility starting in 2015.
- In March 2025, a lawsuit was filed alleging nearly two decades of sexual abuse, where children were groomed, groped, fondled, and raped by staff members.
According to the lawsuit, a former supervisor sexually abused three teenagers at the facility between 2017 and 2018.
One of the victims was allegedly stabbed in the arm with car keys by another staff member as retaliation for reporting the sexual abuse and was threatened by the supervisor.
Staff members allegedly turned a blind eye to the misconduct or actively participated in retaliating against those who reported abuse.
Additionally, the supervisor allegedly recruited young residents to bully and attack other patients.
- In 2022, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) ordered the closure of DBI and another facility due to numerous complaints of staff abuse. The investigation revealed over 30 licensing and maltreatment complaints, including instances of physical and emotional abuse, such as threats, taunting, and failure to intervene in self-harm situations. Despite federal investigations highlighting these issues, the culture of abuse was allowed to persist.

Do I Have a Case?
You may have grounds to file a civil legal action if:
- You were sexually abused by a guard, counselor, nurse, or other youth residential treatment or juvenile detention center staff member.
- The abuse occurred at any youth residential treatment or juvenile detention facility.
Levy Konigsberg represents survivors in civil lawsuits that aim to hold youth residential treatment facilities, juvenile detention centers, private healthcare companies, and other facility operators accountable for their failures to stop abusive staff members and protect young residents.
As civil claims, these cases are separate from any criminal proceedings that may arise from abuse and focus instead on holding institutions liable for damages. This means you may still have a claim even if:
- Your abuser is no longer alive.
- Your abuser was never charged with or convicted of a crime.
Recoverable Damages in Sexual Abuse Claims
In addition to providing accountability and a sense of justice, civil sex abuse lawsuits allow survivors to recover financial compensation for their damages, which may include:
- Past medical and mental health expenses
- Future mental health expenses, including therapy, medications, etc.
- Pain and suffering
- Emotional anguish and psychological harm
- Lost income
- Other economic and non-economic damages
Michigan Sexual Abuse Attorneys
Under Michigan law, a person who was the victim of a sex crime may be entitled to file a civil lawsuit for financial compensation. A sexual abuse case must be filed within the statute of limitations, which is the timeframe within which a survivor can file a civil lawsuit. Under Michigan law, survivors sexually assaulted under the age of 18 may have until age 28 to file a lawsuit. To understand the statute of limitations for your case, it's essential to consult with an experienced lawyer. At Levy Konigsberg, our attorneys specialize in handling both childhood sexual abuse cases and adult sexual abuse cases. We can assess the merits of your potential case and determine how the Michigan statute of limitations specifically applies to the facts of your case.
At Levy Konigsberg, our sexual abuse team is closely tracking these proposed measures in Michigan youth residential facilities and juvenile detention centers and is available to help survivors abused in youth residential treatment and juvenile detention facilities evaluate their options for filing claims both now under the current statute of limitations and under any revised laws in the future.
