ASBESTOS EXPOSURES AT WESTOVER POWER STATION – JOHNSON CITY, NEW YORK

The Westover Power Station is situated near the Susquehanna River, in Johnson City, NY. The plant is only 3 miles from downtown Binghamton, the capitol of Broome County, and is also very close to the Pennsylvania border. Johnson City, along with Binghamton, and Endicott, form the Southern Tier’s Triple Cities. The area was an economic powerhouse before, during, and after World War II. Industrial giants, like IBM called the Triple Cities their home.

Westover was conceived as a coal-fired 119 megawatt power generating station. At 119 megawatts, Westover was smaller than other upstate plants. In addition to Westover’s power generating capability, the facility also served as an electric substation. Westover was operated by New York State Electric & Gas (“NYSEG”). Westover is also known Goudney. This alternative name is a nod to a former NYSEG executive. After years of providing the Southern Tier with electricity, Westover was retired in 2011. The plant was dormant for several years, before being converted to natural gas. Today, the reopened Westover is delivering power once again, but at a fraction of its former capacity.
