Skilled tradespeople, including fabricators, pipefitters, boilertenders, carpenters and others worked together to support America’s dominance of international waters. Navy vessels, commercial vessels, cargo ships, tugboats and ferries were constructed at the Todd Shipyard for decades. Reaching a peak of 57,000 employees at the height of World War II, skilled tradespeople constructed war ships, landing craft, and various infantry vessels. Available statistics show that during the war effort, Todd Shipyard completed or repaired more than 1,000 ships, and repaired thousands more, earning recognition from the United States Government.

After the war, business continued to boom. As the world’s largest shipbuilder, contracts continued to pour in. While government orders slowed, Todd Shipyard began to focus on an ever-expanding base of private customers. Projects, including the construction and conversion of transport and delivery ships kept Todd Shipyard busy, and relevant. Between the 1950s and 1980s, skilled labor was still in demand, with residents in both New Jersey and New York finding ample work at the shipyard. For many families, Todd Shipyard was the only home a parent knew since the beginning of World War II.

Locations like Todd Shipyard purchased vast amounts of asbestos-containing materials to complete various projects. Products like pumps, valves, boilers, generators, tanks, and other propulsion equipment regularly found on ships, contained numerous pieces of asbestos equipment.
